HOT August Nights

25 years ago when we started this crazy farming journey we had a Hot August! Our garden wasn't as big as it is now, but we did have a lot of tomatoes. The plants were loaded but not ripening. July was mild, then along came August. What a scorcher! We had very little humidity, long hot days, no rain. The nights were not cooling down at all.

And guess what happened? Those hot sweaty nights were just what those tomatoes needed. Boom they started turning red - we picked boxes full every day. Plump juicy and sweet. Steve made a huge bowl of salsa the first day. We ate the whole bowl that night. So he made more the next day - and offered it to some friends. Amazing flavor and the colors so bright and crisp.

Every day for a week we picked and wondered how are we going to get rid of all these tomatoes.....We made a sign "GOT TOMATOES - WE DO" Made another huge bowl of salsa, bought some chips and folks would stop in buy a box have a snack and we sold every tomato that season!

Every year since then we make that same salsa and share it with our members during August - Hot August Nights - recipe is available in our recipe book in "August"
