Fall Harvest - Colorful & Full of Goodness

Fall harvest seems to be the most colorful bounty of the whole year. It's the last hooray for many of the annuals and they give all of their energies to create a colorful palette. Not only is the harvest colorful but they are packed full of flavor and healthy goodness.

Produce that is deep in color has more nutrient value for you than those of weaker tones. Not just growing organically will give you those deep colors and healthy benefits. It all comes down to the health of the soil. The biome in the soil needs to be rich in minerals for the plants, rich in natural micro nutrients that nurture the worms and other beneficial within the soil. Those Beneficial's break down organic matter for the plants to consume. Soils need to drain and retain moisture continually. Too wet or too dry the plants cannot consume the nutrients properly, thus creating diseases and loss of the plants.

Healthy Soil = Healthy Plants = Healthy Food 4 YOU!

Here on the farm we are constantly checking our soils in all fields. Amending and timing is key. By keeping a record of where and when we checked, what we found - helps us amend for the season and the seasons to come. We work closely with Bio Nutrient Food Association for their recommendations and education. Always striving to only use Organic Means to enhance the health of our soils, our amendments come from Regen Ag Nation here in Idaho.

Fall Goodness

Ingredients: 4 lbs any meat of our choice or can be meat free . Picture 'beef short ribs"

Season meat with salt & pepper. In a large Dutch oven - 2 tbsp of Olive oil or bacon fat, brown meats. - Add rough chopped garlic 6 cloves, 3 onions, 4 bay leaves, sprig of rosemary, thyme and oregano . Add big chunks of carrots, winter squash (butternut or pumpkin works well). If this is meat free add other items like rutabaga. Here is the fun- 2 bottles of Guinness - bring to a slight simmer on stove top - for meat cover and roast at 375 - 2 hours, turn down heat to 300 - 2 hrs - for meat free 1 - 2 hours is plenty.

Serve with of course homemade bread or sourdough bread. The broth is amazing and can be used for gravy later on in the week.

(we do add fresh cut carrots 1 hr. before serving, as most of all is broken down in to the rich broth - but you decide - either way it is delicious!)

Tough Year - Growing 4 You

This year has been our toughest growing year on the farm. Low snow fall, warm winter created an environment for unwanted weeds and bugs to flourish. Many of which perish during our normal cold winters
